Brand of the year

WOLFBURN CROWNED “BRAND OF THE YEAR”

Up against stiff competition from long-established whiskies from both Scotland and Ireland, Wolfburn has scooped top honours by being voted the Whiskey Committee’s Brand of the Year 2020.

The Whiskey Committee is an independent UK-based association of 133 respected whiskey aficionados. Spokesman Dale Scott commented: ‘We’ve been constantly reviewing whiskies throughout 2020. There’s been no particular theme – everything from major blue-chip brands to small independent producers has been included, and competition has been incredibly tight. Although Wolfburn has only been selling for five years, their brand is increasingly visible and they do a consistently excellent job. They don’t have the widest range of whiskies, but the focus is on quality, and their passion shines through everything they do. Our congratulations to the whole team.’

Whisky Committee administrator John Slasor added: ‘Wolfburn’s blood, sweat and tears have gone into each bottle and their aim is to ensure all have core notes that is a hallmark of their brand, whilst expressing unique traits in each expression that we were absolutely blown away with. There has been not one bottle we have tried that has disappointed us, the list is quite large and includes a number of the small batch releases and that is testament to Wolfburn and their hard work, it has paid off in bucket loads guys. Bravo and thank you.’

‘A welcome surprise and a cracking start to the year’, said Wolfburn’s Brand Ambassador Mark Westmorland. ‘It’s really humbling to hear such lovely comments about our brand and our whisky. Our sincere thanks to the Whisky Committee for honouring us with this award.’

Wolfburn tour

WOLFBURN REOPENS ITS DOORS TO VISITORS

After four long lonely months we are delighted to reopen the distillery for visitors!  Tours will take place each weekday (Monday-Friday) at 10am, 12pm and 2pm. Tours need to be booked in advance via email to tours@wolfburn.com stating the requested date, time and number of people. Tours cost £10 per head, which includes a tasting at the end.  While the distillery has introduced some sensible measures to help stop the spread of coronavirus, our aim is to maintain the warm and welcoming atmosphere that has become Wolfburn’s hallmark, and of course to allow visitors to enjoy our range of award-winning whiskies.

“It’s been a long journey through lockdown,” said Charlie Ross, Wolfburn’s visitor manager. “We’re implementing all the necessary safety and hygiene guidelines, but at the same time we are absolutely chuffed to be able to reopen our doors. We’re hopeful of plenty of visitors during late summer and autumn”

We do ask that visitors respect the measures we have put in place to help stop the spread of covid-19, as follows:

  • Please wear a face mask (this can be removed during the tasting!)
  • All visitors to sanitise their hands upon arrival
  • Please avoid touching work surfaces or equipment
  • Please keep at least 1.5m apart from other visitors and/or distillery staff
  • Tours to be booked in advance via email to tours@wolfburn.com stating date, time and number of people.

By prior arrangement tours may also be booked at alternative times and/or at weekends – please email tours@wolfburn.com

That Was The Year That Was

We’re getting used to the idea that things keep growing around Wolfburn, not least the number of fans of our whisky worldwide!  2019 has been such an amazing year and it’s gone past in such a blur that we thought a brief recap might be appropriate.

We kicked off the year by releasing Batch 375, which was hugely well received all over the globe – it was also the first small-batch release to make it to America, with orders coming from both the USA and Canada.

Spring saw the distillery elevated to a Four-Star Tourist Attraction by VisitScotland.

May saw the inaugural Highland Whisky Festival, for which we did a special release – which was shortly followed by our summer release, and the revamp of the distillery shop. Summer 2019 saw a record number of visitors – including HRH Prince Charles!  His visit was an absolute pleasure, with many drams being enjoyed, and a huge amount of positive press coverage afterwards.

The Mey Games followed shortly afterwards, and early autumn saw the release of Kylver#5, perhaps the best received Kylver bottling to date – it sold out in minutes!

In September we released our second charity bottling: Help For Heroes, which has been hugely well received and raised several thousand pounds for a very good cause. We still have some available to buy on our website.

On top of all the above we’ve done special bottlings for the German, Swiss and Japanese markets, and a series of single casks for countries as widespread as South Africa and Belgium.

All the time, sales of our core range (Northland, Aurora, Morven and Langskip) have kept quietly growing – believe it or not, Wolfburn is now sold in 27 countries globally!

And if the above wasn’t enough to keep us busy, we’ve just launched an online shop: www.wolfburn.com/shop

Thank you to all our followers and supporters for your kind words and loyalty over the year; it has been quite simply brilliant!

Christmas is coming!

We did our first Christmas release in 2017, and if we’re honest it was really only to round off the seasonal series: the Spring, Summer and Autumn editions were produced for visitors to the distillery, and since we don’t get many tourists in winter, some bright spark came up with the idea of a Christmas bottling… and it’s been growing in popularity ever since!

This year’s release consists of 450 bottles.  It’s been crafted from lightly peated spirit matured for a little over four years in a combo of first- and second-fill bourbon barrels.  The peat is immediately evident on the nose – but not overpowering – and the bourbon casks lend the spirit a juicy sweetness.  Here are Mark’s tasting notes, which rather neatly sum up this lovely seasonal dram:

“Peat is of course the first thing I get on the nose, but it’s not heavy and immediately afterwards I’m picking up autumn fruits and berries. On the palate, dare I say it, I’m getting Christmas cake flavours: sultanas and a hint of marzipan! There’s a creamy texture to the spirit, it really develops gently and the trick is to give it plenty of time to unfold. The finish is smooth and long, and there’s a lingering hint of toffee right at the end. It’s just the thing for the festive season!”

Wolfburn’s Royal Visitor

We had an inkling that a VIP visit might be in the offing when one of the officials from the Castle of Mey popped into the distillery to buy whisky for the royal residence.  When the security team came a day or two later, we started to get our hopes up… And then the Lord Lieutenant of Caithness (Lord Thurso) called to confirm!

Cue, a seriously urgent sprucing up of the distillery.  True, it was scheduled for this summer anyway, but it’s not every day that the future king pays us a visit, so we twisted the arms of various suppliers and contractors, and accelerated the work schedule accordingly. Old lacquer was stripped from the stills, then the raw copper polished until it gleamed – and a fresh coat of lacquer rapidly applied.  Walls, stairways, walkways and handrails were painted, and brass and copper fittings and pipes were polished until the whole place was spotless.

The visit itself was a ton of fun.  HRH arrived with a plethora of assistants and security personnel, all of whom were quickly pushed aside as he mingled with distillery staff and visitors alike.  The inimitable Charlie Ross conducted a tour of the stillroom, then it was up to the warehouses and a tasting.  Morven was a definite favourite, with HRH proclaiming a love of all things peated.  Following a dram… or two… or three… it was off to the bottling hall, where he was presented with a specially engraved bottle, which he filled himself (there’s a first time for everything!).  All in all a huge success, and much more laid back than expected.  Here’s hoping to more visits in the future!

Help for Heroes Limited Edition

Help For Heroes fundraising special

Following the success of last year’s charity bottling for PoppyScotland, the second Wolfburn charity bottle will be released in early October, in aid of Help For Heroes.  Like the previous edition, this one has also been produced in partnership with Carnegie Whisky Cellars of Dornoch, and our aim is to raise £10,000 for H4H between us.

Inside the bottles, the whisky has been crafted from a combination of first-fill bourbon and Oloroso sherry hogsheads. On the nose, the aroma is a subtle cross between sweet and spicy; heather honey mingling with traces of cardamom and nutmeg.  It’s on the palate that this whisky really excels though, with a host of flavours bursting through. Rich bourbon notes are complemented by vanillin and a subtle oak smokiness, while the sherry wood imparts a beautiful smooth sweetness to the mix; think golden syrup with a touch of butterscotch. It’s truly glorious.

This autumn marks 80 years since the outbreak of the most destructive conflict in human history: the Second World War.  In honour of service personnel past and present we’ve produced a total of 1939 bottles. They will go on sale next week – a separate email will go out to registered followers announcing the release.  If you are not already registered and would like to be directly notified of this and future distillery releases, please click here.
