New release: Small Batch 318

The sixth in Wolfburn’s small-batch series, Batch 318 comes from a combination of lightly-peated spirit, matured for seven years in first-fill Oloroso sherry butts, combined with spirit matured for seven years in first-fill Bourbon barrels. Just 4,800 bottles in total. A sweet, rounded, sumptuous whisky with a peerless depth of flavour.

ON THE NOSE: On the nose, figs and apricots mix with soft tones of peat smoke. There’s a hint of vanilla and oak present too.

ON THE PALATE: On the palate the depth of flavour is tremendous. Honey-laced porridge meets stewed apples and sultanas. The peat brings with it a touch of heat, while soft oak spices – cinnamon and cloves and ginger – are also present, all overlaid by a wonderful sherry sweetness.

FINISH: The finish does not disappoint; dried fruit and caramel flavours remain to the end and are neatly overlaid with hints of lingering peat smoke.

Customers in the UK can buy Batch 318 direct (customers outside the UK will be able to buy via their usual retailer/stockist).

New Aurora

New improved Aurora

For the past two years Aurora has been our best-selling core expression. Its unique flavour derives from Wolfburn’s signature sweet, smooth spirit, part matured in fresh Oloroso sherry hogsheads, which are sourced directly from the bodega of José y Miguel Martin in Jerez. Since its launch back in 2016 the proportion of sherry-matured spirit has been roughly 30%. We have now increased this to 50%. The additional sherry influence gives it a delicious extra sweetness and greater depth of flavour. To guide you through the new Aurora, here are Mark’s tasting notes:

COLOUR:
The colour is only a smidge darker than the previous version, but the flavour is noticeably richer. Sherry notes were always there, but the extra Oloroso influence really shines through.

NOSE:
The original Aurora had lovely soft sherry aromas, but it’s richer and more noticeable in this new version. Hints of dried fruit and honey are also present, accompanied by subtle overtones of treacle and golden syrup. So far so very good!

PALATE:
Sweet flavours unfold gently; it’s complex and multi-layered and a real treat. As expected, there’s a warmth imparted from the sherry casks, complemented by notes of dark chocolate, vanilla and soft spices: cinnamon meets raisins and dried figs. Lovely.

FINISH:
The new version of Aurora has a longer and more delicate finish than previously. Soft floral notes are accompanied by sweet caramel, which gradually fades leaving just a hint of heather honey at the end.

Customers in the UK can buy Aurora direct (customers outside the UK will be able to buy via their usual retailer/stockist).

Wolfburn Langskip Scoops Top Honours

Wolfburn’s Langskip single malt whisky has won top honours at The Spirits Business Awards, being awarded a Gold Medal in the highly prestigious Scotch Whisky Masters competition.

‘Langskip has previously won several international awards,’ says Mark Westmorland, Global Brand Ambassador. ‘But this one is especially pleasing as it’s our first UK gold medal, and doubly impressive coming from the Scotch Whisky Masters. We’re chuffed to bits.’

Langskip is Wolfburn’s flagship single malt whisky, being matured for six years in top-quality bourbon barrels and bottled at a premium 58% ABV, to ensure a huge depth of flavour.  ‘Whisky fans globally have been enjoying it since launch three years ago,’ comments Mark. ‘It’s a consistently strong seller and benefits from being almost cask strength. Hopefully this latest award helps get it into the hands of some new fans!’

Brand of the year

WOLFBURN CROWNED “BRAND OF THE YEAR”

Up against stiff competition from long-established whiskies from both Scotland and Ireland, Wolfburn has scooped top honours by being voted the Whiskey Committee’s Brand of the Year 2020.

The Whiskey Committee is an independent UK-based association of 133 respected whiskey aficionados. Spokesman Dale Scott commented: ‘We’ve been constantly reviewing whiskies throughout 2020. There’s been no particular theme – everything from major blue-chip brands to small independent producers has been included, and competition has been incredibly tight. Although Wolfburn has only been selling for five years, their brand is increasingly visible and they do a consistently excellent job. They don’t have the widest range of whiskies, but the focus is on quality, and their passion shines through everything they do. Our congratulations to the whole team.’

Whisky Committee administrator John Slasor added: ‘Wolfburn’s blood, sweat and tears have gone into each bottle and their aim is to ensure all have core notes that is a hallmark of their brand, whilst expressing unique traits in each expression that we were absolutely blown away with. There has been not one bottle we have tried that has disappointed us, the list is quite large and includes a number of the small batch releases and that is testament to Wolfburn and their hard work, it has paid off in bucket loads guys. Bravo and thank you.’

‘A welcome surprise and a cracking start to the year’, said Wolfburn’s Brand Ambassador Mark Westmorland. ‘It’s really humbling to hear such lovely comments about our brand and our whisky. Our sincere thanks to the Whisky Committee for honouring us with this award.’
