Winter Distillery Tours at Wolfburn
A Unique Time to Visit Wolfburn - One of Scotland's Northernmost Mainland Whisky Distilleries
It may be mid-winter in Scotland, with fewer visitors making the journey north, but it remains one of the most rewarding times of year to visit Wolfburn Distillery. The colder months are not only ideal for enjoying a quieter, more atmospheric Scotch whisky distillery tour, they are also a crucial period in the whisky-making calendar.
Located on Scotland’s wild north coast in Caithness, Wolfburn continues to welcome visitors throughout winter, offering guided tours that provide a rare insight into whisky production at its most focused, traditional and industrious.
Why Winter Is One of the Best Times to Make Whisky
Winter is, perhaps unexpectedly, one of the best times of year for whisky production. At Wolfburn, it is one of our busiest periods for laying down new spirit. Colder water temperatures support a more efficient and consistent mashing process, allowing our mashmen to work at optimal conditions.
As a result, winter days often start early and finish late, with the distillery operating at full rhythm. The sight of a lone distiller quietly going about their work at 5am, surrounded by near darkness and the gentle hum of machinery, is a familiar and quietly magical scene. Across Scotland, this same ritual unfolds each winter morning – long before most people have woken.
What to expect on a tour
A tour of our distillery begins with an in-depth exploration of the production side of our operation. From milling and mashing through to fermentation and distillation, guests walk through each stage alongside one of our experienced guides.
Our aim is to give visitors a clear understanding of the intricacies of traditional Scotch whisky production, with questions encouraged throughout. This is a great opportunity to get up close and see how the ancient art of distilling shapes the character of Wolfburn single malt whisky.
Traditional Dunnage Warehouses and Coastal Maturation
After your immersive look at whisky production, the Wolfburn distillery tour continues with a visit to Warehouse No.1, where guests discover our traditional dunnage-style maturation process. Here, spirit rests in oak casks matured close to the sea, where coastal conditions subtly influence the developing whisky.
Guests learn about the different cask types used at Wolfburn, including ex-bourbon and sherry casks, and how each contributes to flavour, texture and balance in the final single malt.
Guided Whisky Tasting and Distillery Shop
The tour culminates in a guided tasting of our core range of award-winning single malt Scotch whiskies, putting your new insights to the test with a variety of drams selected to highlight production and maturation nuances. Following your tasting, make your way to our onsite distillery shop, where you can purchase standard and limited-release whiskies, including 35cl bottles of our core range – ideal for travellers with restricted luggage space or those seeking a distinctive souvenir.
Wolfburn Distillery tours are consistently rated 5-star on TripAdvisor, Google Reviews, Trustpilot and Judge.me, reflecting exceptional visitor satisfaction with both the tour experience and our single malt Scotch whisky quality.
