Young With Heart

Wolfburn Distillery is small and is now just over 12 years old. As age is an essential ingredient in whisky, the whiskies on sale, so far, are limited. Don't let this put you off the tour!
Charlie was our guide. Quietly spoken and often difficult to hear above the still noises and other guests talking to each other. But Charlie is worth the concentration. We learnt a lot about whisky manufacture and the warehouse magic. The amber delight is made from water (extracted from the nearby Wolf burn, barley and yeast - that's it! After that it's precision heat control and clever manipulation of the still output.
The barley arrives at Wolfburn already malted (gone to seed), it is ground in a mill, mixed with hot water..... okay, you'll learn the rest yourselves but you can tell I was intrigued by it all.
What I didn't understand was that the whisky is actually made in the warehouse. Whilst the water and barley embue a little flavour, it is the storage casks that convert the alcohol into whisky over time. Hence, the older it is the more whiskyish it becomes.
So the real joy of a Wolfburn tour is that you get to taste SIX of their whiskies after the tour! Drivers can't take part in the tasting but get a minute bottle to take away and everyone gets a Wolfburn glass too.
If you like an occasional whisky you'll walk away with a very warm glow and an inability to pronounce your own name for an hour.
Highly recommended. Great value and a true Scottish experience.

Great staff and great whisky

I visited recently and was given a warm welcom by the staff. Having never tried Wolfburn, I was offered some tasting samples, which I really enjoyed. I left with bottles of the 12-year-old, and the 8-year-old Cognac cask finish, and a Glencairn. I didn't have time for a tour but will be back.

Durch Zufall fanden wir diese wunderbare Brennerei, als wir durch die schottischen Highlands fuhren. Wir hatten eine tolle Tour mit Wilma, die alles erklärte, was man über Whisky wissen muss, wurden durch alle Bereiche geführt und die Tour endete mit einer Verkostung von sieben (!) Whiskys. Natürlich haben wir den Aurora gekauft, den wir gerade gestern Abend in Deutschland getrunken haben. Beim ersten Schluck kamen die Erinnerungen an Wolfburn in Thurso zurück. Schöne Tour, toller Whisky. Wenn Sie im Norden sind, ist diese Brennerei ein Muss!

Expert Guide, Unforgettable Whisky Experience!

We booked as a group of three and basically had a private tour with one fantastic guide. The guide shared excellent, detailed information, and the tasting was a real highlight. Always great to support a local, independent distillery. Highly recommended!

Eine tolle Tour durch eine kleine, aber feine Distillery, sehr informativ & super erklärt durch Wilma - herzlichen Dank dafür! Alles „hand-crafted“, wirklich beeindruckend! Im Anschluss durften wir noch 7 (!) Whisky-Sorten verkosten, was dem Ganzen einen krönenden Abschluss beschert hat. Unbedingt einen Besuch wert!

Intimate distillery tour

Small distillery with the focus on production. Very informative tour and the staff members we met were so nice.
